Coke is obtained by dry distillation of coal under a high tempera ature strip at about 1000 C.The volatile and sulfur contents are very little. According to different usesthere are metallurgical co ke, foundry coke and chemical coke. It is mainly used for smelting iron and steel or other metais. It can also be used as raw m haterials for gas gasification and chemical industry.
 

Foundry coke/met coke is the main fuel of melting iron in the oven.It can melt the material in the oven,make the iron reach great heat and keep good air permeability by sustain stock column.Thus the foundry coke should heave the characteristics of big block,lowre-activity,small porocity,enough anti-crush strength,low ash and low sulpur.

Raw petroleum coke is used as a fuel in many industries as it gives maximum heat with the least amount of ash. The calcined petroleum coke is used as chunks for the manufacturing of electrodes as the petroleum coke is composed of carbon elements. The carbon is the best conductor of electricity.
